| The first salmon come to the river at the end of May. Upstream migration gradually increases, culminating at the end of June and then diminishing during the month of July.
Along its 100-km-long course through the Skellefteå municipality, the Byske river contains about 40 km of rapids and currents with countless fishing spots. The river's average stream flow velocity in Byske is about 41 m3/s and its width at fishing sites is generally between 40 and 80 m.
Through judicious wading in connection with fishing, it is possible to gain access to most standing positions with casting lengths of 10 - 25 m. It should be noted that the river is considered to be relatively difficult to wade because of the rapids with large boulders and high stream velocities. Because of the steep banks with abundant vegetation, underhand casting or similar methods are a great advantage in fishing. When playing salmon, the river's swift rapids again come to mind. Runs of hundreds of metres are not unusual. On top of this, there are large boulders and occasional logs that also work to the advantage of the fish. Most fish are landed with a firm grip in front of the tail fin, a method that is preferable if the fish is going to be released.
Although most salmon are caught on flies, spinning is also an option, of course. Heavy two-hand rods with bait casting or spinning reels loaded with 0.40 - 0.50 mm line are what is used. Common lures are spoons and smaller wobblers.
In addition to salmon, the river also has a lesser influx of brown trout during spring and fall as well as at the end of July and August. The size varies between 1 - 4 kg with occasional catches over 5 kg. For brown trout fishing, tackle and flies similar to salmon are used. There are also non-migratory trout. Other species of interest for sport fishing are grayling, whitefish, pike and perch.
Fishing varies somewhat at different times of the summer. Consequently, we have chosen to present a more detailed account of fishing during three time periods.
The first salmon, May 25 – June 10
The first salmon are caught during this period. Fishing takes place mainly in the Byske community on the river's lower 5 km. The water flow is normally very high and the water is somewhat cloudy. The water temperature is usually about 5 - 10°C. Wading is avoided during the most severe water conditions.
Fishing usually is done with two-handed rods and sinking lines; superfast sinking - grain lines. For sinking line fishing, leaders with a length of about 1.5 m and a tippet with a diameter of 0.50 mm. Flies in clear colours, such as General Practitioner, in a size of 2 or up to 2-inch tubes are used.
When the water temperature reaches 10°C, the sinking lines are exchanged for intermediate or floating lines. The choice of flies also changes (see June 10 - July 1).
Early running silver in quantity, June 10 – July 1
This period is the peak season for fishing for early run salmon. Fishing takes place along the whole course up to Fällfors. The water temperature is usually about 10 - 18°C. Fishing generally is done with two-hand rods with intermediate or floating lines.
As the water clears, darker colours are used in the flies. Flies with a gold body in sizes 2-4 or 1-inch tubes are most common. The most common fly is called ”Den vanliga” (the usual). Other flies used are Red butt, Hairy Mary and Glödhäck. During this period there is daylight 24 hours a day. Fishing is considered equally good at all hours of the day.
Salmon throughout the river, July 1 – August 15
By the end of June salmon have reached upstream stretches at Fällfors. At this point fishing is going on along the entire course of the river. Summer water flows usually reach their lowest level at the end of this period. The water temperature is usually 15 - 23ºC.
Generally the same equipment and choice of flies applies as during the June 10 – July 1 period. During the low-water period, however, it is easier to use one-hand rods. As the water temperature rises, flies of smaller sizes usually are used. Black flies in sizes 4 – 8 are popular.
As summer wanes, the evenings begin to become increasingly dark. Fishing is then usually concentrated in dusk and night hours. Early mornings can also be worth trying. The cool nights can reduce the warmer summer water temperatures a bit and fishing sites often may be idle for a few hours.
Fishing equipment
Usually 14- or 15-foot two-hand rods are used. Primarily with low water during the month of July, it also works well to use one-hand rods #7 - 9, 9 - 10 feet. Reels should have a capacity of at least 150 - 200 m, 30 - 50 lbs backing. In most cases floating lines are used. Sinking lines are used only during the early pre-summer period (see May 25 – June 10). The length of leaders is usually 5 - 7 m with a tippet diameter of 0.35 – 0.40 mm. The flies used are tied on both tubes and double and treble hooks (see respective fishing sections).
Clothing for fishing
Clothing should be suitable for the following normal temperatures: Night: 0 - 10º C Day: 15 - 25º C. Rain normally occurs every week. Throughout the summer mosquitoes and gnats exist in more or less abundant quantities. Protective clothing along with insect repellent provides satisfactory protection in most cases.
Chest waders with felt insoles are preferable to hip boots. For wading in the more difficult sections, the use of a wading staff is recommended.
You will find most fishing spots near a highway. As a result, special clothing and shoes for hiking to the fishing sites are not necessary.
